U.S. Cellular adds the HTC Merge and Samsung Gem to their prepaid lineup

U.S. Cellular customers, meet the Samsung Gem and the HTC Merge, the newest Android members of the pre-paid lineup at U.S. Cellular. The two new Android phones added to the lineup will join the LG Apex and the Optimus U, bringing the total number of prepaid Android phones to 4.

The HTC Merge is U.S. Cellular’s first Android-powered world phone. It will allow you to use the phone globally, without the need for roaming. Simply pop in a local SIM card and you’re ready to go. The Merge features a QWERT keyboard, 800MHz processor, HTC Sense, a 3.8-inch WVGA display, 2GB of internal storage, 512MB of RAM, 8GB microSD card, and much more. The phone will set you back $299.99.

The Samsung Gem features a 3.2-inch display with advanced anti-scratch, anti-smudge, and anti-reflective protective glass. It runs on Android 2.2. It runs on a 800MHZ processor and features 160MB of RAM and 512MB of internal storage with support for up to 16GB. The phone comes with a 4GB card. It’s not the most powerful phone, but for the price of $139.99 without a contract, it’s not a bad deal.

U.S. Cellular Adds Two More Smartphones to Prepaid Plans and Social Scene to Prepaid Messaging Phones

Activation fee waived for Prepaid Plans $50 or higher

CHICAGO (August 16, 2011) – U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM) has good news for those who want to stay on top of their budget while enjoying a cutting-edge smartphone. The carrier has added two more Android™-powered devices to its lineup of prepaid plans. In addition to the LG Optimus U™ and LG Apex™, the Samsung Gem™ and HTC Merge™ are now available with U.S. Cellular’s monthly prepaid plans that range from $40 to $70. Currently, the activation fees for monthly prepaid plans $50 and higher are waived.

Also, the free app Social Scene, which consolidates Facebook, Twitter and a host of other social networks into one place, is now available for download to prepaid data customers on 11 of the carrier’s most popular messaging phones. Use Social Scene to quickly upload pictures from your device, Tweet and re-Tweet in real time and stream customized RSS feeds from more than 50 news, entertainment and sports sites.

The HTC Merge, U.S. Cellular’s first Android-powered Global Ready smartphone, allows users to stay in touch no matter the continent or time zone by using the required SIM card and service for the country they’re visiting. It also has a keyboard that can be switched to 18 different languages and offers users the freedom to check Facebook, tweet, text, surf the web and access e-mails anytime and anywhere.

The $60 Prepaid Plan which is geared toward customers who primarily text and surf the web, includes 450 voice minutes, unlimited text, picture and video messaging, and 2GB of data. The $70 Prepaid Plan features unlimited voice and messaging and 2GB of data.
