Google’s Android OS is now installed on over 500 million devices

Things are looking very good for Google and its Android smartphone operating system. Today, Hugo Barra, Director of Product Management for Android at Google announced that there were now 500 million devices activated globally with Android. Hugo didn’t specify how many of those were tablets and how many were phones.

In addition to revealing the big 500 million activations milestone, Hugo also announced that daily activations were now at a whopping 1.3 million per day. That’s right, every single day, 1.3 million Android devices are activated for the first time.

According to Google’s Andy Rubin, device activations are only counted once, the first time a device is used via a mobile operator.

Congrats to Google and their success with Android. We we look forward to the next milestone: 1 billion devices activated globally!
