Asus: Nexus 7 doesn’t have a rear-facing camera because of price and user experience

Wondering why your Nexus 7 doesn’t have a rear-facing camera? Besides from keep you from looking like a weirdo who uses their tablet to take pictures (I know, it wouldn’t have been that bad on a 7-inch tablet compared to a 10-incher), Asus decided to leave out the camera on the Nexus 7 for 2 reasons: price and user experience.

The company could have added a low-quality rear-facing camera on the Nexus 7, but by doing so, it would have decreased the overall user experience of the device. Imagine having this wonderful Nexus device with a camera that has the quality like those found on low-end phones. I don’t know about you, but I think that would have sucked.

Asus could have gone ahead and outfitted the Nexus 7 with a nice high-quality camera, but then it would have increased the overall price of the device. At $199 for a quad-core with 8GB of internal storage, I’m ok with it not having a rear facing camera.

“Why is there no rear camera?

To make this device accessible to the widest possible market, price is very important. ASUS believes that for this device a good rear camera is important. Adding a high quality rear facing camera will increase the price point and many users would not have a use for it. Adding a lower quality rear facing camera would compromise on the overall user experience so the decision was made not to include a front facing camera therefore keeping the price down and user experience extremely high.” – ASUS

So, how bad did you want a camera in the Nexus 7? Would you have been willing to pay more for the device if it had a rear-facing camera? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
