Facebook and HTC working on a real “Facebook phone” – code-named Buffy

According to All Things D, Facebook and HTC are working together to create the real “Facebook Phone”. While some might consider the HTC Chacha (or HTC Status in the U.S.) the Facebook phone, both companies are working on a phone that will have more than just a dedicated Facebook button.

Code-named Buffy, the new Facebook phone will have the popular social network deeply integrated into it. It will run on a modified version of Android which has been customized to deeply integrate Facebook services, as well as have support for HTML 5. The phone is still a work in progress and won’t be hitting markets until 12 to 18 months.

Although nobody is saying anything directly related to Buffy, a Facebook spokesman had this to say regarding Facebook’s mobile strategy:

“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”

12 to 18 months is still very far away, and as with anything technology related, things could change, quickly. We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes and ears open for this one. As soon as we get more info on Buffy, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
