AT&T makes the new $36 upgrade fee official

As we reported a couple of days ago, AT&T was planning to bump their upgrade fee to $36. The new price change has just taken effect. So if you head to their site and do an upgrade, be ready to pay double of what you usually paid to get a new phone. An AT&T spokesperson tried to blame the fee increase on the cost of new devices:

Wireless devices today are more sophisticated than ever before. And because of that, the costs associated with upgrading to a new device have increased and is reflected in our new upgrade fee…This fee isn’t unique to AT&T and this is the first time we’re changing it in nearly 10 years

If you are an AT&T customer and aren’t happy with this new fee, make sure to let them know about it. Verizon was forced to drop their $2 fee for online payments.

Let’s not forget that AT&T has just lost over $6.68 billion following their failed acquisition of T-Mobile. Could this be one of the reasons behind the new upgrade fee? It is very possible that Big Blue wants to recoup some of that cash at the expense of their customers. What do you think?
