U.S. Department of Justice approves Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility

Just a few hours after the Europe Commission approved Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility, the U.S. Department of Justice has just gone ahead and give the acquisition the thumbs up. The statement by DOJ echoes that made by the Europe Commission earlier today: the acquisition isn’t likely to harm the mobile market.

In addition to approving the Google-Motorola deal, the DOJ also approved the acquisition of certain Nortel Network Corporation patents by Apple, Microsoft, and RIM; and also the acquisition of certain Novell Inc. patents by Apple.

With the ok from two out of five jurisdictions, Google is still waiting for the OK from China, Israel, and Taiwan.
