Less than two weeks after revealing that they were going to offer a website to let users unlock their new Xperia phones, Sony has gone ahead and launched their bootloader unlock website. Starting from today, you will be able to unlock your Xperia Play and Xperia Arc’s bootloader, which will give you the ability to install custom ROMs.
The Xperia Play and Neo will also be eligible to have their bootloaders unlocked once they’re released.
At the moment, only SIM unlocked versions of the above phones will be eligible to be unlocked. There is no word if this will work on the Xperia play once it launches on Verizon, since it’s not a GSM phone.
The site has complete instructions on how to unlock the bootloader. To get things started, you will need to enter your name, email address, and the first 14 digits of your phone’s IMEI number. Once you provide your IMEI number, you will receive the unlock key, which you will use to unlock the bootloader.
Sony has done a complete 180. From locked, sign bootloaders, and devices not receiving updates to completely unlockable bootloaders and even promises of older devices getting updated.
Nice job, Sony Ericsson. Thank you for listening to your customers.
