Motorola Atrix 4G Gingerbread update is now available, adds sideloading, new Blur

The 4.5.91 update for the Motorola Atrix 4G in now available to all, only two days after it was released to beta testers. Although it has been reported to come as an OTA update, you can still head to the Motorola support website and manually download it by following the instructions on-site.

Other than Android 2.3.4, the 4.5.91 update has definitely brought much needed enhancements to the Motorola Atrix and here are some highlights of it, taken directly from the release notes:

  • Faster Webtop Browsing: ¬†Enhancement to webtop application includes Firefox 4.0 so you can browse faster than with previous versions of Firefox
  • HD Video Playback: Enhancement that now enables HD Video Playback in 1080p for better viewing experience
  • User Interface: Updated user interface with simpler home screen design, including shift to use of white backgrounds in menus, enabling better viewing experience¬†

One of the most important additions that came this update is the ability to download third-party apps, also known as sideloading. All you have to do is to head to your Settings menu, click on Applications and the check the “Unknown Sourcessection. You will able to finally download the Amazon Appstore or any apk file that you would like to have on your Atrix.

And for all of you wondering if this update will allow the unlock of the bootloader, the answer is NO. Somehow AT&T or Motorola have disabled the “fastboot oem unlock” feature which was the key to unlock the Atrix 4G’s bootloader. What a bummer…

Let’s all hope that Motorola will keep their promise of unlocking bootloaders for their 2011 portfolio of devices. In the meantime, Atrix 4G owners should enjoy this much needed software bump! Let us know how you like it and head below for the direct link to download the update.
