Modified Netflix app stopped working? Try the official app instead

We’ve been getting a lot of reports today about the modified Netflix app no longer working. I wanted to see what the problem was so I fired up Netflix on my Droid X and sure enough, the app no longer worked. When you fire up the Netflix app, you’re now notified that an update is available and that you must update to proceed. The only problem is that some people aren’t able to update because when taken to the Android Market, they’re unable to download the updated Netflix.

Late last week, Netflix released an update to its Android app. In addition to adding support to more devices, they also removed the device check that was preventing certain non-compatible phones from loading the app. Unfortunately, if your phone isn’t one of the 8 that’s officially supported (LG Revolution, Motorola Droid, Casio G’ZOne Commando, Droid Incredible, Nexus One, EVO 4G, T-Mobile G2, and Samsung Nexus S) you won’t be able to see the Netflix app in the Android Market.

Official Netflix app now works on my rooted Droid X

I wasn’t able to get the movie in the screenshot. Just know that it works fine.

The download below is the official Netflix app from the Android Market. I tested it with my rooted Droid X running on Rubix and it worked fine. If the modified version no longer works for you, you should give this one a shot. Let us know how it works by dropping a comment below.

Thanks to Droid-Life for the download mirror

You are the man Jonathan Royal! Works like a charm!!!

    Thank You!!

Any estimation on when the HTC Thunderbolt will be compatible with this application???

  • Peter

How is the app purported to work on a non-rooted Droid X? anyone? anyone?

    • Works great on the new stock Gingerbread build for the Droid X. If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check for system updates. There’s a goodie waiting for you.

      • Peter

Actually, installing that .apk under my (still!) FROYO Droid X yielded a fully working Netflix, yay!

And… as we speak, I checked again for system update and (finally!) the Gingerbread upgrade was available to me.

        Christmas in June!!

Regarding the Netflix app.. had to uninstall the previous version before it would let me install the new version. But afterwards, works great. Also, checked for System updates and I’m now downloading the Gingerbread update.

I get a parse error when I try to open the file on my droid x. Am I doing something wrong?

    • Did you try uninstall it and re-installing it? Did you install the app straight from the phone?

  • Doug

Invalid parsing error 3 times, 4th time app wouldn’t load. Droid x with 2.3

  • Dustin

Does anyone else have the problem where you can’t resume movies? I’m using a my touch 3g slide running Froyo 2.2.

  • Mike

I had to download the app from the linked website twice until I got a valid download, but now it’s working fine (I got the parse error too). I uninstalled the “broken” modified app first. Droid X on Verizon. How stupid can Netflix and Android market be for restricting this to certain devices? Thank you very much for making this work for everyone!

anyone have any info if the app lets you sign into netflix but then just sends you back to your home screen?

    • Wad3

My Epic is doing the same thing. After sign-in it kicks me to the home screen.

      • bryan

I haven’t been able to find any info about a fix

        • Arose

Same thing on my Galaxy Tab

  • gashmore

Works flawlessly on my DroidX with stock Gingerbread. Had to download twice, 1st time parsing errors, but no problem after that.

    Thanks so much

  • Never has worked properly for me with CM7 RC1 on the Desire Z, always choppy, grr!!

  • SFascinate

Tried all three of the downloads. The “mod-2” one got me the furthest. It just wouldn’t stream. Got an error message saying “could not reach the Netflix service…” The other downloads shut down on me after the login screen. I have a Samsung Fascinate running 2.2 (no new updates). Would love to get this app working. Suggestions???

  • Immaculus

Works great on the Motorola Triumph.  Thanks for the link.  Any news on the updated apk due to the fact that ppl without the “special” phones can’t see it in the market at all.  Thanks Again
