As predicted, Google announced today at the I/O conveference that the newer version of the Android OS will be named Ice Cream Sandwich and that it will launch in the fourth quarter of 2011. Ice Cream Sandwich will differ from Android OS’s earliest versions because it will be compatible with phones and tablets. Google described it as being an operating system that manufacturers can implement in any kind of device.
Google also mentioned that the new version of Android OS will be an all open source. Developers will then be able to use the unified UI of Ice Cream Sandwich to make applications that can run in phones and tablets in one motion. There was no date given about when Ice Cream Sandwich will be released but expect it sometimes in Q4 this year.
