Google is definitely not sitting around to watch its licensees get hammered with patent infringement lawsuits. They went ahead and purchased 1030 patents, related to computer components manufacturing technologies, from IBM.

Google has reached out to Congress and the Federal Trade Commission to ask for a more thourough analysis of the current patents involved in lawsuits against its licensees. They claim that “the tech industry has a significant problem” and that “software patents are kind of gumming up the works of innovation.” The California-based search giant has just lost a bid for over 6000 patents from the ailing Nortel Networks to a group of companies that include Apple, Microsoft and RIM that paid $4.5 billion to counter Google’s offer of $900 million.
