Facebook Android app latest update only works with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and up

Facebook’s Android application received a new update today upgrading it to version 1.9.7. The unsual thing about it is that it will only work with devices running Android 2.2 aka Froyo and up. We can understand Facebook’s move here since 63% of Android devices are running Android 2.3 Gingerbread while there are only 17.3% devices out there that are on Froyo. Here is the full changelog:

  • Facebook for Android 1.9.7 requires Android 2.2 and up
  • A front-facing camera makes it easier to take photos
  • New messaging features let you switch between conversations, include friends of friends, share bigger photos, and see who’s available
  • Various bug fixes
  • Made a security improvement
  • Faster app login and navigation

If you have one of the “eligible” devices, head to the Play Store and grab the latest update for the Facebook Android application.
