As you probably know, Skype released a major update to their Android application today. The update brought video calling and a redesigned UI. Unfortunately, the video calling feature isn’t available on all devices. At the moment video calling is only supported on the Google Nexus S, HTC Desire S Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo and Pro.
I knew that as soon as news hit that video calling was only available on certain phones, someone was going to do the community a favor and modify the apk so that everyone could enjoy this new great feature that we’ve been all waiting for. That someone is developer 0mie, you can all thank him.
The modified Skype APK that you can grab below allows you to do video calling on certain devices other than the 4 listed above. It has been confirmed to work on many devices running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), including the following:
- HTC Thunderbolt
- Samsung Droid Charge
- Samsung Galaxy S II
- HTC Evo 3D
- HTC Sensation
To try it out, simply download and install the file below. Make sure that your phone is set to install non-market applications by going to menu -> settings -> applications -> and check the Unknown sources box.
Just because this file has been confirmed with the 5 devices above running Android 2.3, it doesn’t mean that phones with front-facing cameras running Android 2.2 won’t work, just give it a shot and report back.
