Corning announces Gorilla Glass 4, will survive 80% of drops
Another year another Gorilla Glass. As we’re nearing CES, Corning Incorporated announced a new model of their eve popular glass. It is called Gorilla glass 4. This is Corning’s solution not only to scratches and scuffs but most importantly to phone drops.
Gorilla Glass 4 is the result of thousands of hours of testing to ensure that your beloved devices display don’t shatter as easy as before. Corning says that their new glass is 2 times better when it comes to drops as their competitors. What’s really cool is that the new Glass 4 (0.4 mm) is almost half of the thickness of last year’s Gorilla Glass 3 (0.7 mm), and yet it is stronger and tougher. In addition, Corning mentions that their new glass can withstand 80% of drops from 3.3 feet on hard surfaces.
- Gorilla Glass 4 is up to two times tougher than competitive glasses
- Gorilla Glass 4 survives up to 80 percent of the time
- Soda-lime glass, as deployed in today’s commercial devices, breaks nearly 100 percent of the time
Corning mentions that they sent out test samples to a slew of manufacturers including phone makers. Expect to see it in upcoming devices early in 2015. For more information, hit the source link below.
